The Superior Court of New Jersey, Union Vicinage, celebrated National Adoption Day Nov. 21 at the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth.

National Adoption Day is an annual event in which courts and communities in all 50 states come together to finalize thousands of adoptions of children and to celebrate families who adopt.
Jane Philips, family division team leader, coordinated the celebration with the Union County Surrogate’s Office, the state Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS), and the Union County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

The 1st floor of the Courthouse tower building was festively decorated for the 34 children who were adopted into 27 families. Presiding over the Adoption Day proceedings were Assignment Judge Karen M. Cassidy and Judges William A. Daniel, Kenneth J. Grispin, Frederic S. Kessler, John F. Malone, and Jo-Anne B. Spatola.

Community volunteers from the Union County Child Placement Review Board, CASA and volunteers from DYFS offices in Union County escorted the adoptive families to and from the courtrooms and to the celebratory events.

Volunteers from the New Jersey Renaissance Players portrayed fairy tale characters, and a magician, “Brett the Amaaazing,” also entertained the children.

Stories were published in the “Star-Ledger” and broadcast on WNBC-TV and WPIX-TV.
